Sunday Morning Bible Discussion Group
Would you like an opportunity to think about and discuss the lectionary readings we hear at Sunday mass? The Bible Discussion Group, which began some twenty years ago under the supervision of the late Sr. Marguerite Ledwell, S.N.D., continues to provide St. Mary’s parishioners with a group dedicated to sharing insights into each Sunday’s selections.
Different members are scheduled to facilitate each meeting, with the leader providing a short prepared presentation on the Bible readings. Then each attendee has opportunity, both to relate the week’s Scriptures to his or her own personal experience, and to ask questions about how Catholic Christians should interpret and apply the week’s Scriptures in daily living. An average session might include members sharing how the day’s Gospel applies to their work or family life, or how Old Testament history relates to current moral and social issues, or how we can each provide a stronger witness to the loving truths of the Scriptures in and around our parish.
The Bible Discussion Group gathers in the Lower Church on Sundays around 9:15 a.m., and readings begin at 9:30. Sessions conclude with a prayer at around 10:30 a.m. (before the 10:45 mass). Coffee and light refreshments are provided. Contact: Jonathan Nauman (978-922-7015, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Tuesday Morning Catechetical Reading Group
For more than a decade, parishioners from around the Beverly Collaborative have participated in group reading from Scripture and devotional classics for two hours on Tuesday mornings. Each text is read aloud and in full, with opportunities to pause and discuss throughout. Recent works completed include the Confessions of St. Augustine, St. Francis de Sales’s Introduction to the Devout Life, and Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis. Currently we’re about to begin reading an anthology of selections from The Fathers of the Church.
The Catechetical Reading group currently gathers in the conference room at the Collaborative Offices (St. John’s) at around 9:45 a.m. for informal talk and set-up, with readings beginning around 10 a.m. and concluding at noon. Attendees come late or depart early if they can’t stay for the full session. Several members often bring refreshments for the group, and coffee is provided.
